The announcement

D&D is releasing a Star Wars collaboration under their new Universe Beyond sets, arriving in 2027. Here is what Dan Ayoub, Head of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, said when announcing it at Gen Con 2026:

"With Universes Beyond, we are expanding Dungeons & Dragons into even more worlds we love, like World of Warcraft ... Star Wars is coming to Dungeons & Dragons for the first time, bringing the iconic galaxy to our players’ tabletops.

Dungeons & Dragons | Star Wars™ collaboration will take place in the Season of Rebellion, coming 2027."

What "Universes Beyond" is

Universes Beyond is the banner under which Wizards of the Coast publishes licensed crossover products. It has operated on Magic: The Gathering for several years. Its extension to Dungeons & Dragons is new, and Star Wars is not the first release under it.

The first Universes Beyond product for D&D is D&D: World of Warcraft, released on 17 November 2026 and developed with Blizzard Entertainment. It is published as a Gameplay Expansion, containing classes, species, subclasses, monsters, spells and dungeons for use with existing D&D rules. Wizards has applied the same Gameplay Expansion designation to the Star Wars product.

Points of clarification

The following points have been the subject of some confusion since the announcement.

• This is not a new d20 or 5e Star Wars roleplaying game. Based on the Gameplay Expansion format confirmed by Wizards, the product adds Star Wars content to Dungeons & Dragons rather than establishing a standalone system.

• No ongoing Star Wars product line has been announced. Universes Beyond releases have historically been single products, with commercially successful titles receiving follow-ups. Wizards has not committed to a continuing D&D Star Wars line.

• Edge Studio retains the Star Wars roleplaying game licence. The line originally developed by Fantasy Flight Games remains with Edge Studio. Nothing announced at Gen Con 2026 alters that arrangement.

What this means for our community

SWRPG Community exists to provide a home for players of Star Wars tabletop roleplaying games. That remit is unchanged by this announcement.

We support discussion, looking-for-group tools and resource sharing for every Star Wars tabletop roleplaying property, edition and system on our Discord. 

This will include the Dungeons & Dragons collaboration announced at Gen Con 2026, alongside the Edge Studio and Fantasy Flight Games narrative dice line, Saga Edition, the d20 Star Wars Roleplaying Game, West End Games d6, and any future release.
